The
Pilato Lake: This is surely one of the
most fascinating excursion targets in the
area around Ascoli Piceno. This thanks to
its intact mountain nature, rich in interesting
elements. The departure takes place at Foce
di Montemonaco, and to reach the lake you
must expect a three hours walk. The path is
easy to follow, but it takes a good physics
because of the steep rising of the mountain.
You walk on the gravels from Piano della Gradosa,
where after you reach a green forest. Along
the path you will find big and ancient beeches,
and on the surrounding rocks you will note
many kinds of vegetation. The most interesting
vegetation is marked by signs which indicate
that the area is protected. When you have
passed the rock called Miracolo and the tree
morainic blockings, in a high of 1940 metres
you will find the Pilato Lake. The lake appears
surrounded from glacial circuses on which
emerges the rock of the lake, from the steep
limestone walls used for the mountaineering.
The lake comes defined "glasses lake" for
a long alluvial line that divides it in two.
The level of waters oscillates to according
to the season, in particular way the perimeter
is gone reducing in summer; here a very small
crustacean of strong red colour that in Europe
lives only here. This lake seems to go back
to the Middle Ages and must its name to the
Pilato of the Gospel, than after its dead
it has been taken to this place by some angry
buffalos.

L'Infernaccio:
This place is a very popular destination for
nature excursions because of its outstanding
environmental beauty. To go to L'Infernaccio
you will have to start from Montefortino,
in the province of Ascoli Piceno. From here
you will see the Tenna Valley appear like
a deep incision between steep mountain walls,
and you can enjoy the sight of the massive
limestone. The deep and winding furrow looks
like a big canyon . Because of its many different
types of vegetation this is the right place
to go for those who like botany. Here we are
actually finding our selves more than 800
metres over the sea. The ravine appears dark,
but at the same time mysterious because of
the deafening noise caused by the Tenna River
which appears in the gorge between Sibilla
and Priora They can be admired moreover the
"Pisciarelle", calls in this way for the continuous
one dripping of waters falling from the cliff
that gives the impression to arch on the path.
Following a certain marked path, it is possible
to get inside the San Leonardo Forest, formed
by beech and different kinds of plants such
as lilium, harebells and peonies.
